The scientific picture is more nuanced than official guidelines suggest. IARC (the WHO's cancer agency) classified radiofrequency EMF as a Group 2B possible carcinogen in 2011, and over 240 independent scientists have signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal calling for stricter limits. The US National Toxicology Program found clear evidence of tumours in rats at exposure levels comparable to human mobile phone use. Biological mechanisms documented include oxidative stress (Yakymenko et al., 2015), voltage-gated calcium channel activation (Pall, 2013), and DNA strand breaks (Lai & Singh, 1996). Current ICNIRP guidelines only cover heating effects and were not designed to address long-term non-thermal biological effects.
