Smart meters transmit in short, concentrated bursts — typically 10,000–190,000 times per day depending on the model and network settings. Unlike WiFi which transmits relatively continuously at lower power, smart meters emit high-peak pulses that can briefly exceed the output of a typical home router. This pulsed nature is considered particularly significant because pulsed EMF produces greater biological responses than continuous fields of equivalent average power in laboratory studies. You have a legal right in the UK to opt out of having a smart meter installed.

  • Keep phones out of the bedroom — or switch to aeroplane mode overnight
  • Opt out of your smart meter — or request a non-communicating meter (legal right in UK)
  • Measure first — use an RF meter to identify your highest-exposure sources
  • Shielding products — for high-exposure situations where distance isn't possible

The core principle: distance and duration. Halving your distance quadruples exposure; halving daily usage time halves cumulative dose.

The evidence varies significantly by product type and claimed mechanism. Passive shielding products using conductive materials (fabrics, paints, films) have measurable, independently tested attenuation values — verifiable with an RF meter. Products that claim to "neutralise" or "harmonise" EMF without physical shielding (stickers, pendants, scalar wave devices) generally lack credible independent evidence.
